An ancient mikveh (Jewish ritual bath) was discovered in excavations carried out at the Archaeological Park of Ostia Antica, in June and August 2024. Ostia Antica, located at the mouth of the Tiber River, served as the port of Rome in antiquity. The mikveh was discovered in a building that once stood two or more stories high. One of the unique features of the mikveh is that it has stairs extending across its entire width. An oil lamp with an image of a menorah was found at the bottom of the pool, which helped archaeologists identify the installation as a mikveh. The structure was dated to the late fourth or early fifth century and indicates a Jewish presence near Rome just as in the first century.
