Carl Holston earned a B.S. in social science and his Master’s Degree in education from Towson University. He became part of the ABR staff in 2022 when he became the managing editor of the magazine after having written articles printed in Bible and Spade and for the website. Since 2023, Carl has shared responsibilities with Henry Smith as Administrative Director for the dig at Shiloh. Recently retired after 36 years of teaching high school social studies, Carl has had a lifelong interest in biblical geography and history and now has the opportunity to participate in it. Carl lived in Israel for nearly three years, with two years on a kibbutz in the Jezreel Valley, working in the dairy, in the citrus orchards, teaching English to the fifth and sixth graders there, and studying Hebrew. He served briefly as a volunteer excavating in Gamla under the direction of Shmarya Gutmann and lived for a year in Jerusalem, where he studied at Hebrew University. He is well-traveled within Israel. He enjoys the Shiloh experience not only for the significant work being done there but also for the friendships that have developed with the staff, square supervisors and volunteers.
