An Egyptian-German team of archaeologists unearthed 3000 ostraca (pottery fragments with ink inscriptions) during the most recent excavation season at Athribis (Atreps) in Upper Egypt. The ostraca date from the third century BC to the eleventh century AD, and are written primarily in Demotic and Greek. The oldest ostraca are tax receipts, delivery orders, and inventory lists. Sherif Fathy, the Minister of Tourism and Antiquities, is quoted as stating, “The discovery is a significant scientific addition to our understanding of Egypt’s social and economic history across multiple historical periods.” In the third century BC, Egypt was ruled by the Ptolemaic dynasty, which is generally identified in the book of Daniel as the ‘king of the south’ (ch. 11).
